Chapter 01
Wood or gas is decided by the chimney, not the showroom.
The flue decides more of this than the showroom floor does. If you already have a masonry chimney that can be lined, a wood option stays on the table: traditional open hearth, a wood insert, a freestanding wood stove, one of the high-efficiency EPA-certified models, or cast iron. If there's gas run to the wall and no interest in seasoning wood, the gas side opens up instead: vented or ventless gas, a gas insert, gas logs, a contemporary linear unit or a traditional-style one.
We ask about the flue before we talk about the model, because the appliance that looks right in the showroom can be the wrong one for the chimney behind your wall.

An insert is a chimney job wearing a fireplace's clothes.
Drop an insert into an existing masonry opening and the draught changes. The liner has to be sized to the new appliance rather than the old open fireplace, and the smoke chamber and the damper both get looked at while we're already in there.
That's also the reason the shop that sells the insert should be the shop that sweeps it afterward. We already know what's behind the surround.
Chapter 03
Doors and screens are cut to the opening you actually have.
Glass doors, custom-fit doors, mesh screens, decorative designs and heat-resistant materials are cut to the opening in front of you, not the nearest stock size. Stock doors that nearly fit are the most common thing we get asked to replace.
Measuring off the opening rather than the catalogue page is why a door still closes flush years later.
What happens after it is in.
Once it's installed, maintenance and upgrades keep the appliance running the way it did on day one, and the flue it vents into gets swept along with the rest of the chimney.
Manufacturer tax credits apply on qualifying lines and are worth settling before the model is chosen, not after. Ask before you pick the appliance.
