The whole system, firebox to flue liner.
A sweep here covers the whole system, not just a brush run up the flue. That's the firebox where the fire actually sits, the smoke chamber above it, the damper that opens and closes the throat, the liner running up through the masonry, the cap on top, the crown around it, and the masonry itself, brick, mortar and joints from top to bottom.
Treating it as one system is why a job that starts as a cleaning sometimes ends with a recommendation for a liner repair or a new cap. One part of a chimney rarely fails without it showing up somewhere else in the system too.

What we are actually looking for.
Creosote build-up inside the flue. A draught that has gone weak or started to reverse, which is what pushes smoke back into the room instead of up and out. A cap that is cracked or missing outright. A liner that is failing. Water finding its way into the masonry, which does more damage over one winter than most homeowners notice until the mortar starts crumbling.
Burning unseasoned wood speeds up creosote build-up faster than a dry, well seasoned load, so the calendar is not the only thing that should decide when a chimney gets swept. A house that burns green wood all winter needs the flue looked at sooner than the once a year rule of thumb assumes.
Chapter 03
Repairs we carry out ourselves.
Cap installation and repair. Flue liner installation and replacement, including a full relining. Masonry repair and tuckpointing where the brick or mortar has failed. Waterproofing, to keep the next winter's moisture out of work that has already been done.
Creosote removal, smoke chamber repair, and damper installation and repair round it out. None of it gets handed off to a second contractor while you wait on two separate schedules.
Access is a real constraint, and we say so.
Pitch and height decide whether a cap job actually happens, not just how it gets priced. Plenty of crews will look at a steep roof and turn the work down outright, which leaves a chimney without a cap for another season and another storm.
